What to Expect in an Eye Exam

In an eye exam can expect to be asked about your general medical history, your family medical history and any visual difficulties that run in your family. Our doctor will also need to know what medications you take, and will ask you about your kind of work, hobbies and any special visual needs you might have.

Tests done during a typical eye exam include color vision, depth perception, eye muscle balance, internal and external eye health, glaucoma and cataract evaluations as well as peripheral visual fields.

An internal eye exam usually includes dilating eye drops to look for signs of cataracts, retinal problems, and any indicators of systemic disease such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Photo documentation of your eye condition is used when indicated.

Refraction is done to carefully determine the best vision correction for your eyes. If a prescription is necessary, our doctor will help you decide which type of correction is best for you. The choices may include glasses, contact lenses or the possibility of laser vision correction.

If a referral is necessary for a condition that requires major eye surgery it will be done at this time. We also offer special testing for a variety of eye health and vision conditions.

Not every vision examination results in a prescription of glasses, but if you do need lenses we can provide you with a wide range of lens, frames and contact lens choices.
